2.5D fighting game due out worldwide in early 2018.

Bandai Namco has announced Dragon Ball Fighters, a new 2.5D fighting game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC developed by Arc System Works and due out worldwide in early 2018.

The game uses a three-versus-three team battle system, allowing players to determine the compatibility between characters and form a team of fighters. It will incorporate the “ultra high speed battles” and “flashy special moves” that the Dragon Ball series is known for.

According to producer Tomoko Hiroki, while Dragon Ball titles of recent years have been 3D, they chose 2.5D this time because there were some things that can only be done in that style. While it looks like 2D animation at first glance, it has a broader range of expression as they can shift camera angles and incorporate a lot of unique production not possible in 2D alone.

It should be noted that the press release for this announcement is dated June 12, meaning that Bandai Namco accidentally shared this information ahead of its official reveal. A backup of the press release is available here. The official Japanese website will be available here when the game is officially announced.

Following a leak on Friday, Bandai Namco officially announced Dragon Ball FighterZ for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC during the Microsoft E3 2017 press conference. It will launch worldwide in early 2018.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a collaboration combining classic 2D fighting game mechanics with the Dragon Ball universe developed by Arc System Works. It will be playable at E3 2017.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Bandai Namco:

About

After the success of the Xenoverse series, it’s time to introduce a new classic 2D Dragon Ball fighting game for this generation’s consoles. Dragon Ball FighterZ is born from what make the Dragon Ball series so loved and famous: endless spectacular fights with its all-powerful fighters.

Partnering with Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ maximizes high-end anime graphics and brings easy to learn but difficult to master fighting gameplay to audiences worldwide.

Key Features

  • 3-versus-3 Tag/Support – Allows players to train and master more than one fighter / style, which brings deeper gameplay.
  • High-End Anime Graphics – Using the power of Unreal Engine 4 and the talented team at Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a visual tour-de-force.
  • Spectacular Fights – Experience aerial combos, destructible stages, famous scenes from the Dragon Ball anime reproduced in 60 frames per second and 1080p resolution. (Higher resolution will be supported on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.)

Announced Characters

  • Goku
  • Vegeta
  • Gohan
  • Cell
  • Frieza
  • Majin Buu

A closed beta will be held on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One before the end of summer. More details will be announced soon.
